Celebrating the career of Captain Ken Hawkins

Today we celebrate the career and enormous contribution of Captain Ken Hawkins.  Ken is our last ‘foundation’ pilot, having been with BMP from its inception on 1st January 1989 and has now piloted his last ship before he begins his voyage to retirement with his wife Jenny.

There is little we can say but ‘thank you’ to this extraordinary pilot and colleague who has given so much to Brisbane Marine Pilots over his 31-year career.  His wise words and joyful spirit will be missed, and we look forward to hearing of his adventures in his well-earned retirement.

We’d like to share some words from Ken

“I started as Pilot in Townsville on 24/01/1983 with Qld. Department of Harbours & Marine.

I was appointed Harbour Master Bundaberg in April 1986 and Pilot Brisbane in March 1987.

I am proud to be the " Last Man Standing" of the original 22 Pilots who formed BMP on 1/1/1989.

When I got the job in Townsville, I said to my wife that we will try it for one year and if I don't like it I will go back to sea.  Well I did like it, in fact I loved the job and I have been grateful ever since to have found such a satisfying and rewarding career.

To my fellow pilots, boat crew, ops and admin staff I can only say that I have always enjoyed working with you all in such a great Company. I am very fortunate to have been part of the BMP Family for over 31 years.
