Koopa Swing Basin Simulation

Ships arriving to the Port of Brisbane continue to get larger and the Port continues to improve its capacity to manage these vessels. Work has been underway on a new swing basin, the “Koopa” swing basin, to allow larger container ships to be turned through 180 degrees. Four Pilots recently completed two days of trial manoeuvres in the Smartship simulator. Representatives of Maritime Safety Queensland and the Port of Brisbane also attended to observe the work. Such work is vital to establish initial safety parameters and allows for some experience to be gained prior to conducting such manoeuvres in the real world. The work tested limiting environmental factors, tug limitations and emergency scenarios.

Brisbane Marine Pilots works closely with the Port of Brisbane Pty Ltd and Maritime Safety Queensland to ensure the Port continues to have the capacity to facilitate safe and efficient trade so important to Queensland.
