For millennia, pilots have offered their unique knowledge and skill to assist mariners in bringing their ships safely into port. The first recorded maritime laws were developed in 408BC on the island of Rhodes.

Over time, these were developed into the highly sophisticated laws of the sea that today govern and regulate shipping across the world. The early colonisation of Queensland and the potential of Brisbane as a major Australian trading centre made the appointment of a pilot one of the first acts of the new settlement.

Since its formation in 1989, Brisbane Marine Pilots' commitment to providing a safe, secure and efficient pilotage service has ensured that the company has not only embraced best practice, but continues to set an international benchmark, in the selection and training of its pilots, as well as the adoption of ultra-modern technology in the execution of its services.
